Mirkka Rekola - in English

Joy is a good pathfinder, it has already been where we are going.

Ilo on hyvä johdattaja, se on käynyt jo siellä, minne ollaan menossa.

Man stands like a narrow doorway in the landscape.

Ihminen, seisoo kuin ahdas portti maisemassa.

You call it death, and that is what it calls you.

Sinä sanot sitä kuolemaksi, se sanoo sinua siksi.

The gag is passed around, the disease spreads.

Suukapula kiertää, tauti leviää.

The world is a table laid, there you see your hunger.

Maailma katettu pöytä, siinä näet nälkäsi.

If the will is free, can it be yours?

Jos tahto on vapaa, voiko se olla sinun?

What a lot imagination can achieve. And you belittle faith.

Mitä kaikkea luulo saa aikaan. Ja sinä uskoa vähättelet.

The secret of the hermit’s long life: he didn’t see anyone dying.

Erakon pitkän iän salaisuus: ei nähnyt kenenkään kuolevan.

We look at the one who casts his look on us.

Me katsomme sitä joka luo silmänsä meihin.

Mirkka Rekola (1931-2014) is one of the most notable Finnish poets and aphorists.
