Torsti Lehtinen - in English

We can choose what we eat, not what is served at table.

Voimme valita, mitä syömme; emme, mitä pöytään on katettu.

You cannot make a flower grow faster by pulling at it with pliers.

Kukan kasvua ei voi nopeuttaa pihdeillä nyhtäen.

Drunks and criminals are not as good human beings as we are; they are as bad.

Eivät juopot ja rikolliset ole yhtä hyviä ihmisiä kuin me vaan yhtä huonoja.

Beware of starving to death while pondering on the innermost nature of bread.

Varo kuolemasta nälkään miettiessäsi leivän perimmäistä olemusta.

The spotlights of reason sweep the strange room of reality. Pity on those who try to understand.

Järjen valokeilat lakaisevat todellisuuden outoa huonetta. Sääli niitä, jotka yrittävät ymmärtää.

I would like to be killed in battle for the right cause, if only I could think of a right cause.

Kaatuisin mielelläni taistelussa oikean asian puolesta, kun vain keksisin oikean asian.

It is worth while explaining things only to those, for whom it is not necessary to explain.

Vain niille kannattaa selittää, joille ei tarvitse.

We embrace each other over an abyss. If we let go, we fall.

Syleilemme toisiamme kuilun yli. Jos irrottaudumme, putoamme.

He took the highest degree in astronomy and became a night watchman.

Suoritti korkeimman arvosanan tähtitieteessä ja ryhtyi yövartijaksi.

We have been made the keepers of so much. From a moment's passion an immortal soul is born into everlasting pain or glory.

Meidät on pantu paljon vartijoiksi. Hetken hekumasta syntyy kuolematon sielu iäiseen tuskaan tai autuuteen.

The aphorisms in English were read at the international cruise of authors at the Baltic Sea in 1992. The aphorisms are from the collections Hyppynarun varjo (The Shadow of the Skipping Rope, 1986), Nuorallatanssija (The Tight Rope Walker, 1987) and Kuolemattomat sielut (The Immortal Souls, 1989). Unfortunately Torsti Lehtinen doesn’t remember the name of the translator.
